ChargerLAB tested an original prototype: a 4G modem similar to that of a Wi-Fi hotspot, but which connects to a tablet or computer via USB-C. It is then recognized as an Ethernet device and transmits its connection to the internet without any configuration and consuming only about one watt. This is not the prototype of an upcoming product, rather a working concept of this intriguing idea.
Why use such a device? The idea is to offer a simple and inexpensive mobile connection for devices that either cannot have one — a portable Mac, for example — or can have one, but at a high price — cellular iPads, typically. With such a product, you can add a 4G connection by plugging the USB cable into your iPad and then your Mac, it's easier than using a dedicated modem or your smartphone in connection sharing.
In detail, we note the presence of a second USB-C port to allow the device to be charged at the same time as the cellular modem is used. The connection is limited to 150 Mbit/s, which should be sufficient in most cases. The idea is interesting, the design should be improved with a box that would integrate the antenna, but it remains to be seen how much such a product would cost.
The site says it would be cheaper than the cellular option of an iPad, which is €170 on the Pro. Would you be interested in such a product if it cost between 100 and 150 €?
